Okay guys, i have been looking for something to do over the Christmas holidays and upon my many searches on the gumtree, i found a 1985 datsun 720 Diesel Ute for $300 with a blown block. After looking at it, pointing out two rust holes and a lot of haggling, i got the poor guy down to $130, and picked it up that weekend. After heaps of research and I'm still not finished, we decided a v6 conversion would be fun. (Just a pity I'm not allowed to start until after my last exam, November the 27Th! Counting down.) So the goal is a Twin Turbo V6 vn commodore engine into the old girl, give her a bit of oomph... Pictures can all be found in my album on Photobucket at - www.photobucket.com/TheDoltsuni need some advice on what i should do with the diff, I'm sure it will need upgrading to cope with the power, but what options do i have? Cheers James

you would need to use the commo box, have a tailshaft made and also a gearbox x member, not sure what you would do about the speedo too. just put a rb30 in it, its a tight fit length ways, but the rest is easy. or you can buy mine if you want?

Haha as much as i would love another Datsun, i need a shed of my own first 5 so far is bad enough, i mean im only 17, keep going the way im going.... but where abouts in tassie are you? i would love to see the old girl but as for the rb30, its not as much power unfortunately, and for drifting and messing around, plus being a teenager i think power is the most important The tail shaft and Xmember is not a problem, as between myself and my dad we can machine them if it comes to that, im more concerned about the diff, you believe that a standard diff can handle a worked V6 VN twin turbo?

I bet you two cartons of red tinnies and a pack of winny blues that that bogan piece of iron will not destroy that diff

You know that by saying this ima try as hard as i can now tom? but Datsun definitely has proved itself so far, well in that case i only really need to work on the x-Member and the Tailshaft, ohh and the mounts, but other than that it should be relatively easy

Thats pretty wild! im with Tom, the diff should last (but maybe not forever) and im with Gordie, RB30 would probably be easier because its nissan and its lego (ish). And ill say dont make too much work for yourself, especially if youre just starting out, the wilder it is the longer it will take to finish and the more it will cost! good luck!

Cheers Datsunreal, my dad has a v6 commodore in his hilux, so we are figuring it can't be that hard to do, plus there was one done in burnie a few months ago, theyre not real common, but going to be a hell of a lot of fun when its done im taking everyones word for this diff, and if i break it Tom hereby owes me 2 cartons but its not going to be too bad, im going to do it in stages, first stage is the engine and box running, then come the mods and turbo's

As Tom backed me up and you didn't specify which Tom he can supply 1 carton of the two haha

Haha sounds like a plan, so which of you two is the tom who used to stay at the miners cottages in rosebery every now and then? had a lot of long chats to my dad Lizard about Datsuns? haha She will definitely fly once done, and im hoping to have her done early next year even

Weld up the diff and it should be fine. With the availability of cheap manifolds, etc for RB30's off ebay, the RB would be a much cheaper option to make big power. One turbo, one manifold, one wastegate, etc, etc. But if you want to do something different then go for it. It's going to be a fun job making manifolds to fit a turbo either side of a V6 in a 720 engine bay

Its going to be lots of fun Scando, thats half the plan, but from seeing the performance to fuel out of both engines one in a ute and the other in a skyline, well the ute with a commodore v6 does 9 litres to the 100kms, and runs a lot more power, the turbo is going to go in after the engine is in and running, so that will be interesting, still may end up with a supercharger instead

Hehe, say goodbye to fuel economy once you start running boost with a standard computer Supercharger would be a lot easier with the V6 I reckon. Maybe you could run the computer off the VT's that had the supercharged V6? I know FA about Commodores so I don't know how much is interchangable?

Unfortunately not a lot is interchangeable without changing heaps of stuff, at least from what i have learnt so far, but i have a mate who has lots of fun re doing the chips in the computers, so it may take a while but we will get it eventually
