Hi I'm thinking about putting an L18 into my 120 wagon just wondering about the mounting. Is it best to lob off the A12 mounts and weld on some from a datto that came with an L motor or use the whole 180B X member, LCA's etc.? Although, I've heard the latter will increase track, change the steering etc? Also will a bluebird 5 speed box fit in the 120 manual tunnel?
Cheers Zak.

Stanza crossmember and engine/gearbox mounts allow you to fit the L series motor into a Sunny! So maybe finding a Whole rusted out Stanza to pick apart and get your purchase money back by selling the leftovers as scrap steel would be best! The Stanza 4sp gearbox is also the one you'd want as it's one of the shortest L series boxes Datsun made! Be careful not to exceed the maximum capacity ceiling (+60% i think) for rego purposes, the change from A-L series will mean a mod plate anyways! Some Datto Sunny's came with a A14 so a overbored/stroked L20B is possible but the Stanza 4sp won't handle that much power so? My choice would be a late Sunny coupe with a very mild L18 with STD size(87mm) flattop L28E pistons, single sidedraft manifold, prefectune 45mm Weber style thottle body, Microtech ECU, custom airbox, custom extractors, 1'3/4" mandrel bent stainless exhaust with quiet muffers! Oh and make it a sleeper(140hp/800kg) i think it might show up a few V8's!

Thanks for the advice guys. The L18 i've got is currently in my 1600 wagon which won't be ready for quite a while, i want to spend heaps of time making that one really good. So i thought i might pinch its motor for a sleeper $1.20 wagon.

I did this in my mates car, as you probably read in that old thread.
180b x member was easy but with 180b lower arms you get lots of extra track and camber! stanza would be good if you can find one, use the steering arms and you can run big brakes and struts. you will need threaded radius rods or something for adjustments (we did)
Later model cars have a lot of the bolt holes you need already there for the cross member. the trans tunnels are pretty roomy your box should fit, had a dog leg 5sp in my mates car. had to make the x member though
the stock diff has coped with the L18 with 2x solex for about 5 years so far, so theyre tougher than you think.
good luck! 120ys rock! what colour is yours have i seen it at uni?

Thanks for the tips man. Stanza sounds like the way to go. My wagon was really badly painted in dark green(with a brush) by the previous owner, i drove it like that for about a year. But I've just recently stripped it back and fixed nearly all the rust so it's just gonna be in primer now for a while. It's a 77' so hopefully i'll have those bolt holes. gotta love the y! Cheers.

howdy, I'm still considering the 120y L18 conversion I'm going with the 180B front end and stuff but the thing I'm unsure about is what is the best way to set up the clutch? i.e( converting it from cable to hydraulic) is the best way to just drill a hole for the clutch master in the firewall and use the pedal box etc. from the 180? I've researched everything else quite a bit but this is the bit I'm scared to undertake;). Any advice would be great. Cheers. Zak

Yes you have to drill a hole for the hydraulic clutch master. you can use the 120y pedal box ok. it sounds nasty but its not too hard.
