She looks like a top project!! sticking with the L series? Is that a half cage I spy in the back? What are the big plans?
Maybe we could all do a group buy on bumper chroming and new dash pads??

nah the L series is for sale... big plans are to fit a VG30dett (which i've got sitting ready to be rebuilt) plus a few other plans... wont go into much as not sure how far i'll go and plans change every week...
oh and the cage doesnt meet requirements for rego as its only a bolt in aluminium one so it has to come out... will most likely put a half cage back in though...

A VG30 will get the heart rate up!!! is the dett the twin turbo or n/a?? whats the go, can you buy a fitting kit or is it all custom, and is it as hard to find a manual gearbox as they all say? It looks like losing the fuel fill flap is pretty common, I think I've lost 4 or 5.

yeah its the twin turbo... got hold of a guy in the US who has fitted the VG30 in before so hes making my engine mounts for me as well as custom sump and oil pick up line... i'll probably have to mould the fire wall a little to get a decent dump pipe in... just a little tight... other than that there will be a lot of other custom things required...
nah manual boxes are fairly easy to find... know of 2 for sale at the moment...
oh and i've got the filler flap just wasnt on the car when i bought it...

Sounds like you've got it sorted. Got to love the Yanks, they put a man on the moon, and a VG30 in a 1600!!

I think there are one or two in Aus with this conversion aren't there? How close can you get the engine to the firewall?

theres been a couple of single turbe VG30dets put in out of the nissan cima in aus but not the dett out of the 300zx so should be fun...
the engine isnt the problem its the dump pipe off the back of the turbo virtually has to be flat and is a bit restrictive so i'll put a moulded piece in the firewall to compensate for this... will act as a heater too... lol...

I was thinking more for weight distribution. The VG30 would be shorter than the L series wouldn't it? So if you could get it hard up against the firewall the weight distribution would probably still be pretty good? Sounds like you've got a lot of work and a lot of fun ahead
