Have you thought of using the N42 head on the L24 block? should reduce your compression and you get 44mm intakes as well.
im sending my N47 off this week for a reco and 44mm inlet valves, should give me about 9.6:1 on the engine calculator with flattops.

I agree, if those exhaust liners are designed to get hot it's definately not what you want. The hotter the exahust temp, the hotter the turbo. The hotter the turbo, the hotter your inlet temp. Are you running an intercooler?
I run mine on avgas, it's great stuff. A bit hard to come by now though. I've got a department of environment logbook issued through cams so that I can use it.

Great conversation guys, sorry to throw in but of some concerns are knock sensors which unless I'm wrong have only any application on the rolling road as on road or track vibration and bumps tend to muck them about.
I struggle with high compression, timing and fuels with my NA L20, but now have tried (fried) a few variations. How many heads ARE there out there, I was offered a Brookfield not so long ago....

I believe the ear-muff style ones are the way to go. So you can actually hear what's going on and decifer between rattles and actual detonation. Having said that, I know Andrew Lawson runs a knock sensor on the steering wheel of his 200SX and he's not the kind of guy to use something if it doesn't work Probably one of those things that you get what you pay for. I have no idea what they cost.

Are you running an intercooler? I run this intercooler, temps are about 26-28C normal driving, and about 36C after a few 1st, 2nd, 3rd pulls. Nigel Attachments:

That's a good design. It's hard to come up with something for a non-crossflow engine. Mine has a nasty crossover pipe running from the turbo across the front of the engine to the other end of the intercooler. I can't remember what my intake temps were on the dyno but 36C sounds quite reasonable.

Hi, the weather cleared up for a few hours on sunday, so I pulled it down for a look, It looks like it's been detonating for awhile, but it give me a change to fit my EGT probe Nigel

At least the pistons still look ok so that's a bonus. What brand of head gasket was that? I think the gaskets I've been running lately are Duropro or something like that? Only cheap but work well. I tried a graphite gasket at one stage but couldn't get it to clamp down properly.

mmm thats blown good! is that a valve kiss on the edge of the cylinder? i hope not, thought about eyebrowing the block while the heads off, my block has a notch machined on that spot for the intake valve which i think is factory, helps with breathing as well as added space for the edge of the valve.

I'm in the process of building a bottle press, and once that's done, I'll build up another engine, (I want the press so I can press the valve guides when I do the head work). I still haven't decided if it will be a L28 or a L24, I have one of each engines, the L24 has dished pistons, but I don't know about the L28, till I pull it down, I'm wanting to do this on the cheap, so it will need dished pistons already, I'll be do bearing, rings, seals, head work and arp head bolts. Hi, Got it back together, and it's going very nicely, my EGT works very nice, and super responsive. made a large change on my spark table, too what it was when I blew the head gasket, so hopefully I shouldn't do another one. Before After Nigel
