Hey guys, probly not the place for this but i'll give it a shot. can anybody help with my current engine build? its a ca16 head on a ca20 block. how much modifying is necessary to get water jackets and oil galleries compatible? what timing belt to run? will a ca20 headgasket do? trying to gather information before starting so any personal expiriences or ideas/hints would be greatly appreciated
Cheers Nic

i had a look at a ca20 and a ca16 headgasket on the net (one beside the other) and i noticed that they will bolt together and the oil galleries are close enough to go if not the same so i reckon i will go with the ca20 gasket unless it will run too cold or other similar problems. was hoping the ca16 belt will fit, as far as i can see it should. well keep you updated

I've heard bout 2.1L or 2.4L CA18DE head, CA20 blocks combo's in Japan! Not sure which crank or rods to get 2.4L but, maybe Z22 or KA24DE! depends on budget how far you can go, but get chosen block, crank, rod and head chem cleaned and crack tested to avoid losing all in one mighty meltdown! Also ARP mains, rod and head studs and good blueprint/balance are good insurance if you can fit them into a budget! Good luck!

yea i thought that maybe the ca16 head would have too small combustion chambers in it and wouldn't realy be worth getting ported out. any ideas on that? and yea i was thinking maybe z20 conrods and maybe crank if ca20 crank and z20 rods aren't compatible, but thats still abit iffy at the moment. just mainly concerned on wether the head will bolt on the ca20 block wiht minimal or no modification for now; if anyone would like to shed some light on the matter then that would be great Cheers Nic

i will take some pics of ca18 det head and a ca20 bottom end very soon, i think they straight fit, just belt issues... they use evo rods in them as far as i see. ca 20 bottom end with ca18 head. manifolds different as ca18 has 4 and 8 port manifold but just use all ca18 from block up i keen to look into this as i am building a ca18det for the dirt and few more cc would work well

Yep, just checked Wiki and CA18/CA20 heads are interchangable hey, so i guess ca16 heads are too! If you fitted a CA16DE head to a +20thou CA20 block(ser3 bluebird) with the dished pistons the compression shouldn't be too high! Prob is the rods are weak and won't handle more than bout 8/10psi boost and the CA18DET has a crank mains girdle and oil squiters for piston cooling ( the CA20 don't)! Just a thought, but if you fitted a CA16DE head to a CA20E block(Pintara) with the correct oversize pistons to get around 10.5:1 comp you'd end up with around 2.1L and 150hp at bout 6500ish rpm NA! Put that in something 900kg< and it would be a rocket hey?
