hey, im currently getting a datto 1600 ready to rally, im at the point of fitting an engine, the vehicle was setup with a sr20 so the crossmember has been reversed and the drag link changed, im putting an L18 in it, so what im wonderin, is it better to have the larger l20 type sump at the front of the crossmember and more likely to be damaged or to change the xmember and drag link back to normal and have the smaller 1600 sump and then have the protection from xmember. i have sat an L20 in it just to check some things but when mounted (using 1600 mounts on 200b eng) the rocker cover hits on bonnet, so can any of you 1600 rally boys help me out? thanx, dave.

Won't matter once you have the "Don't leave home without it" sump guard. On my 1600 it goes all the way to the back of the gearbox. I guess if you think about it 4odd litres of oil is best off behind the crossmember if you are getting serious about handling! As with all l20 fits to 1600s the engine mounts need to be slotted to allow engine to drop as much as possible. Using the l16 sump of course. Any help?

Have seen both setups - in front and behind and both are fine with an appropriate sump guard.
Best option is to revert back to standard crossmember as 1) protects sump better 2) is PRC (production rally car class - most common and accepted rally class in Australia) and does not put you unnecessarily into the "modified" clubman class. Some events will not allow you to compete technically due to the wrong crossmember.
If you want to rally, the biggest issue is the roll cage. Need to log book a cage into the car by the end of this year otherwise you will need a full FIA ($5K+) cage for next year.
Cheap option is to buy a Bond bolt-in $1200 cage delivered Tas and get car log booked ($60) with inspection ($60) and you are good to go. Bolt -in cage will need support bars welded to main hoop - rest is bolt in. Car must be presented in ready to rally/race condition for inspection/log book.
Real pain having to do all this. But do it this year. I am buying a bolt-in for my road 1600, just for the log book. CAMS making it harder to compete.
Look at the CAMS Manual online; specifically rally PRC,clubman, classic, historic. Best option is PRC.

The car came from qld and is already cams log booked with cage and was used in late 90s as rally car but with fj20. mark i was speaking recenlty with you about this car! iam hoping to use the datto is prc next year.

I am hoping to join you both. I will certainly not be risking life and limb but I think I will really enjoy it even at a non competitive pace. Plus won't it be sweet to have a few 1600 screaming through the bush on a crisp winters night.

Planning on having a Datsun 1600 rally DVD night/discussion next Sunday 26/6 6pm at my place Howrah. Anyone else interested?
Be in my garage with heater and 2 rally 1600s. Might watch USA racing 1600 DVD and some in-car rally footage from my rallying. Get fish and chips 7pm.
Email if interested.

I'll be there! I have an old PRC 1600 I would like to do some basic rallies in next year, I'll turn up Sunday though in my 'new' 1600 road car I bought in NSW!
