Hey Datto Freaks Im Ben Im feeling old I bought my first 1600 at 16 as an apprentice on $4 something an hour from mitsubishi motors in kingsmeadows 18 years ago for $2500 rego PB1800. I love datsuns I havent had one for about 14 years or so but we have an old school 1600 now. These babies are so easy to work on in the old days we would set the watch just to see how fast we could swap a diff,Dump some springs,or change a head etc.Oh we are from Lonnie keen for a cruise sometime. Ben

So Im driving this beat up tergo van down from the mainland and shes pissen oil and the windows jammed and the rear door doesn’t close and im dizzy as f*ck from the fumes. I pull my sleep deprived ass over in Camble town to scrounge some red bull, coffee, junkfood pickme up or anything to get me down that last leg to Slobart when threw the haze of carbonmonoxide poisoning I see this add. Its pined up and photocopied on the stupidmarket wall and Im flashing back like the wonder years. 18 years old, lank greasy hair, covered in pimples and a pair of keys are burning their way threw my ripped jeans pocket. I was buying the same crap at the same super market, travelling the same stretch of road but the keys are to a Dato and she’s my first car if not first love. 180B white body with a black vinyl roof, the one advertised is a slightly older vintage than the original by three years but in a lot better nick even now. So $500 cash latter and a few tears from old mate as she signed the transfer paper and I’m kicking on towards Ross in a Dato.
I promest to keep her tidy and im trying but within 3 days she started to come apart. Not to worry, Im a complete noobe when it comes to mechanics but in the last few months iv been hacking away.
Jobs done so far:
*Replaced blown manifold gasket, twice. The extractor is mildly rooted hence the nick “180Barp”. *Patched the exhaust, many times. Curse them gravel roads, ended up getting the lads in Moonah to do it properly, bunch of legends. Cleaned out the front brakes, no more squeak. *Solved a nary tail light wiring puzzle had me studying the wiring diagram in the manual for hours. *Installed a vintage pioneer amp from the tip shop, again a puzzle thanks to the random tripper out there in net land who posted the schematics. *Coaxed some more out of the worn out clutch after discovering that handy traveller nut. *Smashed an indicator…Not a job just a pain. *Found the oil leak it was the bloody sensor the whole time. Replaced that. *Renewed all the filters. *Broke the radiator, soldered it back together again. I do I didn’t know there was a tap on the bottom to drain the radiator flued so when I needed it empty I was just pulling the bottom hose off and trying to contain the spill with a tarp. Eventually it snapped, eventually I found the tap. *Put in some fresh points, screwed with the timing (checked it today with a timing light very tidy eyeball job). Reset the tappets in an attempt to get rid of that bloody noise. Any tips? It sounds like tappets but now after doing them buggered if I know.
Jobs to do:
Everything. The next on the list is to screw with the fuel mix and see if that helps.
After that, all the brushes are gone, everything’s sloppy. Clutch needs a new plate. Brakes are leaking flued so they could use new slave cylinders (any one know the details on the brake kit? Bursons couldn’t help). Could use some new extractors at some point. Fix that loose wire in the amp. Replace that bloody cracked indicator and a new bulb in the tail light, that would be good. Take an oxie to the exhaust. Blab bla the list continues.
Thankfully like Datsunreal says "Datsuns are like lego". Shes been and education with a whole lot of skun knuckles and although mostly just small jobs each one has been a confidence boost. In a few months time: oil rings, timing chain. Pull the L18 out and stick it back in again Mohahahaha gota love a dato.

Gday I'm Jake, I'm 20, a removalist, and since the day I could talk have had Datsun stamped deep into my head. My old man used to navigate in a Datsun 1600 in the Tas Rally Series, years and years ago. Some of you properly know it, dark blue driven by a bloke no shorter than 7 foot and navigated by a blond midget. So dad still has his old 1600, needs a shitload of work though, and my little brother is collecting 120y coupes. And I've finally joined in, selling my piece of crap Toyota Supra turbo, and got myself a 79 Stanza. And I love it. Bright red, standard as a rock. Only modification is the mags (not sure what they're called) with all jet black interior. Though I'm after a couple of bits and pieces, anyone with a heap of stanza parts can get hold of me, cheers.

Spotted you pulling out of the Glen Huon Rd intersection at Huonville on Saturday. I think I remember seeing your dad in action at a Huon Rally a fair while back too.

Hi. The best rubbers for your Dato are from Datsport in SA. You can get cheaper ones from Ringwood Auto parts, think have a store still on ebay. Both very good sellers, products and I have bought from both.
Cheers

Hi. I have been a member for the last couple of years, but have never officially introduced myself; so here goes.
I am into Datsun 1600s and have 2 going ones, 1 in development, 1 complete spare and 2 shells. My good friend Stuart Franklin has roughly the same number, so we are both 1600 mad!
I am into dirt rallying in the Tas Rally Series (TRS), navigation trials, khanacrosses, Baskerville. Mainly use my Orange PRC Datsun 1600 2 litre EFI, close ratio 5 speed, 5.1 LSD in the TRS.
Am currently building a "clubman" rally car with option 1 (very close ratio, 1:1 5th) copy gearbox, SR20VVT non turbo (turbo not allowed), 4.8 LSD - to use in the TRS. Awaiting engine from Japan. Painted, caged, rear suspension complete - just finishing off the front suspension.
Also have a white 1600 road car with 2 litre, downdraft weber, 5 speed on SI rego.
So anyone want to talk 1600's or need some info, send me an email.
I'm a property valuer by day and have a market stall at Salamanca Market, but Sunday is Dato and family day.

Welcome Brendon, got any pics of the C210? If you have any questions about setting up the turbo on the L series I may be able to help.
Cheers, Shane
