I'd heard there's some big dollars being spent on historics at the moment but I think there should be some kind of law against a gemini with an $85,000 price tag! A few people have told me there were a couple of quick Z's at the Phillip Island historics meet earlier this year too. I think mine's a little too far gone to turn back to a moderately standard car to run historics! I know Mick would like to run his in historics but they don't run Sc here. What is scarey is that Pearce's Mustang is still 2-3 seconds quicker than me even with all the restrictions of historics! Might just stick to targa class I think

Yeah, price can be a bit rich...Bo Seton, Glen's dad, had his Nc V6 Capri for sale for a reasonable $35,000 at Eastern Crk.. Dont worry to much about the 'Stang he's 2.5ltrs bigger and Moffet was doing 60's at Symmons in 1972!!! mind you the Formula 5000's were doing 50.1's in the same year...
Mick could run his as an American '280Z' which is the same shape as the 240/260Z and run a 3ltr grunter!!!! this is an old PRC rally trick.

I see that Gibson Motorsport has there Group "C" Nissan Pulsar Exa for sale $65,000. (fourth car down the list) www.powerplayimports.com/includes/cars_list.php?make=NissanThey even have one of the DR30 skylines for the measley sum of $125,000. (straight under the Exa). Me being a sicko who likes FWD Datsun /Nissans would love to have the Exa parked in my shed. I suspose I could even make room for the Skyline if I had to.

Heres the Exa. I would love to have this. Imagine it in Road trim. I think with the right driver it would scare quite a few hot street cars. Notice I didnt say with me driving it!!!

Bluerat: So are you pretty open with the internals for historics? Like you say, one of the 3.1 stroker motors in a 240Z whould be bloody quick if you were allowed to run it? My dad's boss is Kerry Baily and he's mentioned that he may try to bring his 300ZX sports sedan down to try to beat that outright lap record from the formula 5000 days. He said he did 52's in the Supra in private practice and thinks the ZX would be a couple of seconds quicker! He also hinted that if he does bring it down I might possibly get a drive of it 1000Kg + over 700hp........ Boy do I hope he does bring it down Love the photos, wish they had have left touring cars as it was instead of destroying it! Wombatracing: I read an interview in Zoom with Fred Gibson that mentioned that Exa. He said it was unbelievably quick in a straight line but had that much torque steer that even the driver didn't know where the car was going!

Scando let us know if he does bring it down. I would love to see it.
Bluerat: how do you think the rat would go against it? Better than one of my Cherry's hey! (650kg with all of 59 hp)
Maybe I could hook the Cherry up to the back of his car and have the fastest Cherry in Australia.
Any idea of what the fastest Datsun is that has gone around the track??

Your Dad's boss is Kerry Baily!!!!!! and he still has the 300zx......man what a weapon, didn't they change the rules to stop him winning any more??....they limited turbo, multi valve engines to 2520cc's, the buggers...no fun at all. hope you get a drive. Tell him Alan Jones in a Porsche and Brocky in the Monza sports sedan were doing low 51's in 1981 around Symmons. What does your dad do for a living? I just looked up his 92 and 93 Aust. Championships in the Supra Chev, but dont have much info on the 300zx...
The group Sc regs for engines are the same for Nc, ie the engines internals are free, exept the crank, and max over bore is 1.5mm, but the 280Z is listed so you could build a grunter... the one I saw a Mallala won by over half a lap, from things like a 351 Pantera and early 911's etc. bit of a weapon. Hey Wombat, you work in the Mining industry, just go and buy it!!!! and get Decky to drive it, he knows how to punt a front wheel drive. Hey, it's only got another 100hp on the Opel that was on Top Gear last night !!!

Fastest Datsun, not mine!!! A guy by the name of Hill's in a 1600, and Motty in his 180B have done 68,s with under 2 litre L blocks, and Kelvin Maxfeild has done 61's in his FJ20T 1600 last year. That's all I know about, or they are the fastest I know about...Oh what about AJL in the 200sxr does that count!!!

Kerry has actually run a 6 litre chev in 300ZX since he got hold of it. Before that it was running the twin turbo V6 and from all reports was very very quick but it was also a hand grenade. It rarely went through a meeting with out blowing up! They stuffed him up by setting a class weight just after he built the car so he had to add in a fair bit of weight. I think he's won 4 or 5 Aust championships but I can't remember if he won one in the ZX or if they were all in the Supra? It's the baskerville outright lap record he wants to break. John Bowe currently has it in a ralt open wheeler with a 50.2 I think. My dad is a marine mechanic at baily marine in huonville but he did his apprenticeship at Warwick motors so that's where the whole Datsun thing got bread into me As for the quickest datsun around symmons I'm not sure but deane would have to be close for baskerville. Although didn't Dave Griffiths have a very quick FJ20 powered 1600 improved production car a few years ago? ?

Was it the ex Keith Carling 300zx??? Yellow? or did he build it up? and has he raced it recently? It would shake up the Targa class!!!
As for the fastest Datsun around Symmons, there was a bloke in 1983 who did 59.65 in a Bluebird.....his name was FURY. He went quicker in 84 doing a 58.63 but snapped an axel on the start line!!
What was this thing of Dave Griffith's, it sounds like a weapon.

Yeah I'm pretty sure it was the ex Keith Carling car, that name sounds familiar anyway. There's not much left of what he bought though. Pretty much the whole car has been rebuilt. The only part left that is still original 300ZX is from the A pillar to the B pillar and even that has been hacked down to 19Kg! He's been running it the Aust championship this year but it's in the new class with sports sedans and trans ams mixed together, not sure what they call it. He's been running around 4th or 5th I think but he reckons it's all driver. He hasn't been the same since he had his big crash a couple of years ago. I don't think they'd let it run targa class for some reason but it'd embarass the sports sedans that are running down here at the moment, including Calvert in his old Supra. Ah yes that datsun would have been quite quick As for Dave Griffiths car, it was a few years ago so I can't remember much about it but I know it was a 1600 and I'm pretty sure it was FJ20 powered and I know it was running at the pointy end of improved production so it must have been pretty quick!

I was only joking about the Targa class !!! I just looked up last years results, he was in the top 2 to 4 in most rounds last year, not a bad effort!! now those Sports sedans are real race cars not like these pretend ones they run in the Touring Cars, V8 Supercars, hardly!!! Anyway, are you planning on cranking some boost in the Zee and giving that 1600 a run!!! Some guy's up here have purchased a Bluebird Group C lookalike and are planning on fitting a RB30Turbo!! so look out....... So Wombat, what are you buying? not another Subaru are you???

Bluerat: RB30ET into a bluebird. Should be bloody quick in a straight line, corners might be a problem with all that weight hanging over the front though!
Hopefully do a bit to the motor in the Z sometime soon. I'd like to get a good head done with increased combustion chambers that I could just bolt onto any L28 and run about 15psi. I'd rather go this way and make scrap metal out of an engine every now and then rather than spending a fortune on forged internals. There's quite a few other jobs I want to do first. A drivetrain that will handle the power is pretty high on the list! Got a lot of work to do on the handling too.
Have you talked to your mate Nev lately? I don't think he'll like what they're planning for targa class. They're going to split it into only 2 groups instead of 4 and All turbo, rotary and V8 cars will have to run in group 1.
Deane: Can't wait to hear more about the car! It was a different colour when Dave was running it wasn't it? Although by the look of your avatar it's had quite a bit done to it since then!

I might have some photo's of it when it was raced, did It run the Rebels back then, and have some bright sign writing on it???
As for the Bluebird, power induced oversteer fix's weight induced understeer!!!
Tougher driveline!! Powerglide and 9 inch diff?? Tremac 6 speed and Jag rear end?? L28t sounds like a hassell, why not rb25 or rb26 or rb30, with rb26 head??? alright alright this is coming from a guy who has shunned technolighy,(I cant even spell it!!) and runs L20.....
As for a Naughty Nev, I spoke to him last week, no mention of the classes, I'll suggest he pop's in a starfire four...
Now back to the FJ20....

I'd say that is Deane's car you have the photos of but I'll let him verify that. Powerglide and 9 inch sounds good No, I've just had a 280ZX box rebuilt and if that doesn't hold up to it then I think SR20 internals into the Z housing is the Way to go. As for the engine, there's a few reasons I haven't got for an RB series engine, the main one being that an RB26 enigne, RB25 gearbox, and all the other parts necessary to do the conversion would mean the car would owe me about double what it does now. The other main reason is that when you look in the engine bay of my car you see an engine, a big turbo and not too much more. This is very handy when the people working on the car are an accountant and a mechanic who has been working on outboards instead of cars for the past 20 years or so As for Nev, I like the suggestion of the starfire four. I've often said there aren't enought 4 cylinder commodores in motorsport............
