Scando, maybe you can plumb in two 220hp outboard motors, move em well back and hang on, come to think of it, one 220hp, lightweight, compact outboard might be just the trick for me?, I could put it where the rear seat was, and hook it up to a V drive! It would have to be 2nd hand, as you could build a damn good L series for $20,000.

Thanks Tom ;D Bluerat: I've often wondered how outboard motors rev at 6000 rpm all day, are compact, and have good power. But the 4 stroke outboards have bugger all difference to a car engine! Turn a civic engine on its side and you've pretty much got a Honda 4 stroke and Yamaha build all Toyota's twin cam engines so that should give you a fair idea what their 4 stroke range is based on! I could see a 225HP Yamaha V6 sitting between the strut towers of your 1600 with a T28 hanging off either side

how do they cool outboards? no radiator, infinite cooling tank. you would have to tow a caravan full of water, and it would probably still overheat. outboards are so light because they have a limitless source of cooling water! it took me a while to work this one out but it makes a whole lotta sense.

Yeah cooling is one thing, and they pump sh*tloads of fuel through them. Outboard economy is pathetic in comparrison to cars. Even with the 4 strokes.
Maybe a water tank on the roof? Might not be good for handling though ;D

I might have some photo's of it when it was raced, did It run the Rebels back then, and have some bright sign writing on it??? Yes, it had Rebels. The paint was ugly IMO. I'd like to see some pictures of it back then. Here are some of it's transformation:- pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/dth_1969/my_photos

Very nice job Deane, a real credit to you. Your spare struts and old Hats look a lot like what I run, but the rest does not!!, I like your new Bilsteins, were Quadrent good to deal with? was that a dry sump pump hanging off the side of the block, or just an uprated pump??
I will drag out the photo, It may take some time as I don't have a scanner.
I had a top day on Sunday at the Khanacross at Latrobe, I ran The mighty Gazelle, and had a ball. Might have to change my spare, spare 1600 shell into a khana special and have a run with Tom.......Drive of the day went to 6 legends in a $50 180B, no fear....
Scando, they had a write up on young Swainy in todays Advocate, he broke the Targa lap record last weekend 57.8

Deane: The car has come a long way, good job! I take it the photo of the car when you bought it was taken in Dave's shed by the old kart chassis sitting next to the car?
Bluerat: I think that was Swainey's first meeting with a new big horsepower cosmo 13B. I reckon he'll have a fair chance of winning the series next year.

Nice job Deane, that roll cage is a work of art. I'm interested in what comparison differences between your last car (Subi) and this one in both perfomance and sentimental qualities, do you reckon that with a 4wd system the 1600 could be ahead? The Stokes 1600 in Targa 2004 was only let down by lack of power, when I spoke to him he had hoped out of his Lambo (or Ferrari) and into the Datto for Targa and he said handling wise it wasnt much of a backward step.

Tha Subaru did everything well and nothing brilliantly, the Datsun does nothing well and everything brilliantly Nah, seriously - the WRX was very easy to drive, it never put a foot wrong and was very comfortable. The Datsun is hard to drive, bites when you fcuk up, is loud, uncomfortable and smelly. I like the Datsun best ;D

do you reckon that with a 4wd system the 1600 could be ahead? Therotical question...hard to say. The Datsun is ~400kg lighter and has ~50kw more atw. Sticking an AWD system in it would make it heavier and consume some kw via the drivetrain. It would be easier to convert a WRX to rwd and lighten it. How do you thing a ~1000kg WRX with 200kw atw would go compared to my Datsun?

Bluerat: The way Whitey talks about the Lambo I reckon he'd prefer the 200B SSS! I reckon they'll be back to the GTR soon if they can't get the power they need out of the Lambo.
Deane: So was that your kart in the photo? Did you race karts at all?

A gentleman up here blanked off the front wheel drive on his WRX, to avoid the 4WD class in a hillclimb, wasn't to quick! couldn't get it off the line?? funny that.ha ha. Kelvin's FJ 1600 is still 2sec's a km slower than a state level 4wd rally car on bitumen, but a second quicker around Symmons, comes down to the standing start I suppose? and most 1600's on gravel are around 5sec a km slower. After spending a lot of time in a WRX this year I'm begining to believe they arn't to bad a thing, no, no ,no I didn't just type that, I'll go and wash my mouth out with soap!!!! Jesus, I hope Wombat doesn't read this.
Now, Scando, Deane and 510racer I hope you are all planning on coming up to the 2 day Clubday at Symmons next month!! You will all have to pull a spark plug lead off to make it even for all us poor, old and slow northern members.

I appreciate your thoughts on that, Deane. I came to a similar conclusion from a different angle, a few years ago I got into the drags and had a V8 LJ Torana with 340 hp@tw did 12.78s to go any faster would compromise drivability for the sake of traction (never got to use the nitrous) it was good on bitumen but horrific in dirt (no steering), I had a 1600 which I used while working on the 'Rana and ended up having way more fun and bloody thing was nearly as quick. After forking out less than five times the $$ I have a car that is a much better over all experience. Bluerat you are a mine of information, thanks. Ps SUBARU=U R A BUS:)

(Darth Vader voice) Join me Bluerat come to the dark side. Buy that Subaru you know you want to.
Dont worry even when you have a Subi you still cant get the Datsun blood out of your system.
You can never fully recover from Datsunitis (this is a real diease).

I won't be able to come that club day sorry Bluerat. I've got an exam on the 26th so I'll have my head in a book all that weekend As for a Subi I'd say definatly not to buy one. I'd say Deane has got it spot on here. I bought a reasonably well modified 1990 Lancer GSR Turbo a couple of months ago for a daily driver and after 2 R30 Skylines, a sunny, a 180B SSS, and my Z it's my first non datsun car. It goes fairly well, handles nice, is comfortable, easy to drive...........................................and boring as all fcuk. I think I'll be selling it soon and getting another datto. ;D

Hope this is the car Deane?? No Wombat...I won't come over to the dark side...This Subi is a little out of my league to run, new tyres every 30km's and $6 a litre fuel to run it etc, etc, etc gets a little expensive. And guys, remember there has only been one four wheel drive built worth owning, and that is a crusier......... Sound's like a tough LJ, what do you mean 'It was no good on the dirt!!!' ? your a very brave man to even try!! did you run a 308 or Chevie?
